Type-A Parent ... Here I Come!

In just a few short hours... a very, very few hours... I will be on my way to the airport. It's time for the Type-A Parent Conference in gorgeous Asheville, NC! This is my first blogging conference... my first chance to actually meet the fabulous women of Type-A Parent IN PERSON! I've been writing for Type-A Parent and helping Kelby Carr with the site for almost three years now. It's definitely time to put some faces with the personalities. I can't wait!

Piano Protege

This little monkey has been regaling me with beautiful piano selections of her own composition this morning. So far, I've heard the classic 'Horsey Run Faster', followed by the more mellow selection 'Fishes in the Water'. If I'm lucky, she will play her latest masterpiece, entitled, 'I Like that Crocodile'.

If she keeps this up, I need to invest in piano lessons.

Getting My Pretty On With Mary Kay

I've never been one to spend hours fixing my hair or doing my make-up. However, with life as busy as it is, these days I feel lucky to slap on some eye liner and mascara before calling it good enough. I used to buy fancy cosmetics and spend hours getting my hair foiled, but these days??? Not so much. The spirit was willing, but the pocketbook and available time were weak! Needless to say, I was more than a little excited when Mary Kay offered to send BlogHer members sample products to try.

This is the Compact Mini, which holds three eye shadows (Mineral Eye Color Bundle) and blush. The shadows and blush are in little magnetic trays that pop into the compact, and then the upper part of the compact can be lifted to reveal a compartment for the applicators. I love this little compact! It is cute (requirement number one), refillable (requirement number two) and not too big that I can't toss it in my purse for touch-ups.

As for the make-up, I have only this to say: I'd forgotten that I have cheekbones. I haven't used blush in so long, it's ridiculous. Shame on me! I have depriving the world of the opportunity to view my cheekbones in stunning color. :-) Seriously, people... there's a reason blush exists. And the eye colors have been fun, too. Mary Kay has created Eye Color Bundles to make it easy to find the right color combinations, so I don't have to stare at the catalog and figure out what colors will look best. (I always wimp out and choose shades of brown anyway, so it's nice to have someone else tell me I need to add a pop of color.)

Mary Kay is hanging out on Facebook these days, so be sure to check out what's new and nifty. Orders can be placed through the website or with individual reps (I bet you know someone who sells Mary Kay). You, too, can have cheekbones again!

If It's Friday, It Must Be Pool Day

All winter long, I bide my time. I suffer through the work craziness and the home craziness and think longingly of summer. Specifically, I long for Friday afternoons because as my coworkers know, Friday is pool day. I don't care how pressing the deadlines are. I don't care how messy the house is. I don't care if my verbs are hanging out there with no noun to follow. I'm heading to the pool with my kids. And, if the weather looks iffy for Friday afternoon, then we might just switch work days around a bit and go on Wednesday or Thursday.

Summer will be gone before we know it, and between work and softball and tball and all the normal stuff, I will feel like I haven't spent any time with my girls - except for the glorious hours on Friday afternoon. We ride the lazy river, we splash in the kiddie pool and we stare at the cute lifeguards. Wait... that might be more me than the girls...

Anywho, if it's Friday, it's pool day. And it always feels good.

Brain Dump

iPhone 4. Love it. This phone is like taking my computer everywhere I go and I think it's brilliant. Think I would have loved the Droid X2 just as much - this is such an upgrade over the ol' Blackberry. Anywho, weeks of dithering now over.

Softball. I feel consumed by softball. We are either at practice, at tournaments or planning for an elaborate, themed tournament that is coming up in a few weeks. I'm never home. This is bad.

Confirmation. N is being confirmed this weekend at church. I'm so excited for her, because this is a big moment in her life. I'm so excited for me, because it means the end of the weekly confirmation classes. One less thing on the schedule! Whoo! The grandparents will arrive tomorrow to indulge in a weekend of grandkid-ness. My house is a mess. See above 'I'm never home'.

Books. My review of the sequel to Waiting to Exhale - Getting to Happy - is up at BlogHer Book Club. I hadn't read the first book or seen the movie, so it was interesting to jump in the middle of these women's lives. I liked it enough that I think I will read Waiting to Exhale to see how they got to this point.

Back to the iPhone. I was at the doctor's office the other day and downloaded a book from my Nook account to my phone... and was reading in just a couple of minutes. That's way too cool. It's not going to replace my Nook, but the app is very handy for when I don't have the Nook in my purse.

Sunburns, Softball and Food

We're in the middle of a softball tourney for Miss N. Today was a rather tough day. Our girls have had a two weeks off and there was definitely a little rust. It's also been toasty, which has led to the sunburns referenced in the title. Even with spf50 being reapplied, both N and I are showing some adverse affects from our day in the sun. Take a couple of weeks off, add in some heat and you have a recipe for a stressful day of softball. Well, stressful for the mamas!

The first game we lost 2-0, but the girls rallied nicely and slammed our second game 15-3. The third game ... well ... it was one of those games that we should have won. We were hitting well and just needed a teeny tiny break. Unfortunately, we were the ones giving all the breaks. Error after error after error... it was a tad ugly and we lost 9-1. In good news, today was pool play, which gives us our standings for bracket play tomorrow. Tomorrow it's play until you lose. Hopefully, we'll be in a groove.
Considering I spent much of the day at the ballpark, Food Makeover Day 4 was pretty good. Nonfat vanilla latte for breakfast, barbecued chicken sandwich for lunch and a turkey and cheese sandwich at the park for dinner. I also noshed on some grapes and watermelon. So that was great! Until I came home tonight... and then I made myself another barbecued chicken sandwich and grabbed a beer. Oh well.

Food Makeover Day 3

Another good day! Slim Fast and nonfat vanilla latte for breakfast, granola bar for snack, baby carrots and a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch, one cookie (so sue me) and veggie quesadillas for dinner tonight. We added sliced carrots this time - yum! We probably overdid it on the cheese we added to the quesadillas, but they were darn good!

Tomorrow, I need to try to work on my water consumption. I drank three cans of Diet Pepsi today. Bad, bad me.

Still no decision on the phone issue but by tomorrow night, I will have made my choice. I'm tired of dithering!

Decision Paralysis And Day 2

I've got to say, it's much easier to behave myself in regards to food when I have to report in on the blog! Today was pretty good - Slim Fast, granola bar, grilled chicken wrap for lunch, two cookies (emotional eating), Italian Pasta Bake for dinner (recipe below) and a beer. Not bad. I actually was so busy today that I didn't spend much time thinking about food. That, my friends, is rare!

The decision paralysis referred to in the title is, quite simply, driving me crazy. I absolutely cannot decide between the iPhone 4 and the Droid X2. I can get a new phone at any time now... but since I can't figure out which one I want, I'll hang on for a bit longer. Today I was almost swayed to the iPhone based on the lack of color options in the cover of my choice for the Droid. This evening, I'm thinking that's a stupid reason to give up the 8mp camera on the Droid for the wimpy 5mp camera on the iPhone. Tomorrow... who knows what I'll be thinking. So, until I get tired of thinking about it, I'll hang on to my Blackberry and whine.

Italian Pasta Bake

1 lb penne pasta
1 can diced tomatos, drained
2 cans kidney beans, drained
1 jar spaghetti sauce
1 tsp Italian seasoning
8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese

Prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain and return to pot. Add tomatos, beans, sauce, seasoning and 1/2 of the cheese. Pour into 11x7 baking dish and bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake an additional 15 minutes.

We usually serve this with a salad and often use low fat cheese. The recipe says this serves 6 at 580 calories per serving with 11 grams of fat. However, I'm guessing we get 8-10 servings out of the casserole dish and with the low fat cheese, the calorie count is lower. Enjoy!
